Neighborhood information> Garden City> Histroy:

History:
Until the very early years of the nineteenth century the land of Garden city was only occupied by Kasr El Aaly (the "high palace' for khedive Ismail's mother) and the two sarayas owned by Viceroy Ibrahim pasha and the surrounding hills referred to as "Tal El Akareb".

Nevertheless Garden City is located very near to the center of Cairo and its position was of great potential importance. Before 1905 the land of Garden City was in its own world of struggles as it was torn apart in the midst of political, economic and financial turnovers between parties like the Nile Land and Agricultural company, a group of American financiers, Prince Ahmed Kamal Rifaat and a Belgian consortium.

The plans were laid out by Lamba, a wonderful series of curves neatly organized resembled the streets and that was the start of what blossomed to create the new neighborhood. Garden City was a cute maze inside a hexagon, streets changed names with their curves and intersected one another many times and to add a final touch to bring out the feelings of people in it Lamba placed a giant fish statue to the center.

Garden City was like a tree and it's leaves and branches were the villas and mansions erected in its midst. Spacious properties competed silently for the moral satisfactory of having the most prestigious designs for their houses and gardens. Garden City kept growing into a full high-class residential neighborhood with many landmarks such as the town's largest proprietor (the Vatican), the British embassy, hotel Semiramis and later on the American embassy.

Thereby Garden City flourished into a prestigious luxurious place attractive both politically and residentially.

Garden City today: Garden City now is considered a relatively small neighborhood, but very elegant or as most Egyptians say it. chic.

The neighborhood managed to maintain its body and soul the way it was fifty years ago, in fact Garden City is considered the least affected neighborhood in Cairo baring in mind the great changes that occurred in the past century regarding industry, technology, politics.etc.
